The family was on a mission: To get to Perth. It's quite difficult to decide what to see or not see as we fly down this enormous West Coast. We'd heard about the Pinnacles, but weren't sure about whether to make the detour.

Thankfully we came to the conclusion that we will not be in these parts again for perhaps another 15 years, so we took the coast road from Kalbarri and enjoyed the scenery all the way. The wildlife, particularly western blue tongues, finches and kangaroos was prolific. The road took us past Pink Lake which was most definitely pink tinged, a wind farm and more wild flowers, banksia and grevillea.

Our plan was to see the Pinnacles in Nambung National Park and then use a free camp for the night. The sign at the turn off stated that the road was unsuitable for caravans and trailers and that these should be left at Cervantes, about 17km away.

Although our map showed the road as sealed, we thought we should heed the advice, so we set up at Cervantes for the night and returned for a sunset tour. We were very unimpressed to find the road in to be very suitable for vans and were even less impressed to see a huge sealed carpark with bus parking bays, again, very suitable for van parking!

The loop drive through the Pinnacles Desert is the only part that's unsuitable for towing and there's a walking trail through the whole place...

Even though we'd wasted money on a night's accommodation, the whole experience was really worthwhile.

In the Pinnacles Desert thousands of limestone pillars rise out of a stark landscape of yellow sand. In places they reach over 3m high. They're the eroded remains of a bed of limestone, which was created from seashells breaking down into lime-rich sands.

Linda attempted some sunset photography, but the little point and shoot camera just didn't perform. Guess what Linda wants for Christmas??!!
