We undertook the next haul over to Broome. We'd heard good and bad about this town, but we loved it!
There's so much to see because of Broome's pearling and world war 11 history, as well as the natural beauty of the area. Pindan is the name for the red dirt that creates such a dramatic backdrop to the beaches.
The sunsets over Cable Beach are absolutely beautiful. The girls enjoyed a camel ride along the beach, past the "clothing optional" area. Even Keith decided to get in on the act (it was really just to stir the kids and sorry, no photo supplied)!
We didn't time our visit to see the best natural features of the Broome area. An extremely low or even a negative tide allows you to explore a reef further up Cable Beach, see ancient dinosaur footprints and witness a phenomenon called "Staircase to the Moon".
As you can see from the photos, the colours are magnificent. The little point & shoot camera does just enough to capture the essence of the landscape.
We met some lovely locals in Broome, who invited us back to their place for lunch and told us alot about the area, the building game and what day to day living's like.
They took us out to the port, which has the most crystal clear water. We actually saw a green turtle from the pier. Apparently dugongs and rays are a common sight there.
We had a lot of people tell us that Broome is over-rated; yet just as many people said they loved it so much that they extended their stay. We think it's a wonderful place that's full of surprises. It's almost like three towns in one: China Town; the wharf and the 'burbs. It's so spread out and we found it a little hard to navigate. Yet it really is a long way from anywhere else.
We would definitely visit again, although we'll save our pennies and fly up...
