We had a budget breakfast of bread and ham bought from the shop and headed to the beach. We did some reading and swimming and at 2.30pm headed to the pier to get a boat over to Phi Phi Lei. Ko Phi Phi is actually two islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Lei - the former is the larger where you can stay and the latter is the island at which the film "The Beach" was filmed. We had taken a trip called the sunset trip and we did some snorkeling, some kayaking and general enjoyment before arriving at Maya Bay in time for the sunset. Our boat was quite big and people were jumping off the side and having their snorkeling kit thrown in to the sea straight after. I did this big jump and took a few seconds to catch my breath before retrieving my snorkel and mask that Neil had thrown in. I mistakenly assumed it would float and it wasn't there when I reached for it! We had to sign for this stuff and I didn't fancy a bill for my snorkel from the tour company. I dived deep and opened my eyes and I could see the mask descending into darkness
I didn't really enjoy the snorkeling, I think it was my first time and I wasn't really happy with the whole breathing underwater and not through your nose thing. I may think again before signing up for any scuba courses! Kayaking was more fun even if Neil couldn't take instruction from the back of the boat.
We entered Maya Bay from the rear through a gap in the rock, after walking a hundred metres overland through bushes we found "The Beach". It was an awesome sight and both of us mentally revised our "Most beautiful place in the world" lists. I couldn't fathom why I had not visited this spot on my previous visit to Ko Phi Phi. The guys in our little tour group had a game of beach football and as it began to get dark we got in kayaks and went back to the boat. We had some food and drink on board and got back to Phi Phi Don around 7pm.
1 Monkey Beach on Phi Phi Lei
. I mustered some more strength and took a few more strokes down it was hard work. I got the damned mask in my clutch and exhausted, let my natural buoyancy return me to the surface. At the surface I looked back at the boat and saw Neil bent double with laughter - he had seen it all and was very entertained!I didn't really enjoy the snorkeling, I think it was my first time and I wasn't really happy with the whole breathing underwater and not through your nose thing.
