It was around 6am when Gabi and I arrived by bus at Bangkok's famous backpacker hangout Khao San Road. We were met by the usual touts but we made our way independently up and down the street trying to find some accommodation. Well, I was looking for a place to stay while Gabi was looking for some transport down to the Islands. Tonight I would be meeting Neil from back home while Gabi heads down to the islands to meet a friend there. We didn't get much luck at first so stopped for a coffee and some breakfast at a cafe. It was then I noticed that people were still awake and drinking from the night before!
I'd been given a recommendation a few days before from a couple in Chiang Mai and I headed a few streets away and found a place there. It had its own swimming pool which I think is a first on my travels! I stayed in and around the room for most of the day while Gabi popped in and out getting herself sorted for her 8pm bus. After Gabi left I got a few hours sleep and set the alarm for around midnight when Neil was expected to arrive in Khoa San Road.
At midnight I got up and headed over to Gulliver's - an Irish bar at one corner we had picked to meet at. I was quite excited to have a friend come and visit while I was traveling - it was also going to be nice having someone around at Christmas. I stood on that corner for around 2 hours in the end! I saw a few sights too I can tell you - drunk people going in and out of the bar and Thais outside touting all manner of late night services. At 1am there was a mass exodus as the place closed and everyone spilled out. It was around 2am that I finally met Neil - he was in the wrong street but never-mind. I think we both had a burst of energy and a desire to go and get drunk so we dropped off Neil's bags at the hotel and got straight back out again. We found a bar that was still serving and got down to catching up. During the next few hours we met a few funny characters - there was the white twenty something Bob Marley wannabe from London who had been living out here as a DJ for four years and a woman who was sounding more and more like a sex tourist after telling us stories of past Thai girlfriends she had. She took a shine to me and Neil got a photo of her licking my bald head! It was late!
It was also Christmas Day and we were bringing it in at an outdoor bar in Bangkok. The sun had come up too and I realised two things - that I had been awake a full 24 hours and that I was wrong to look down my nose at the revellers from the previous morning who were still up drinking at daybreak!
