This morning I woke up and was really cold! Pai is in Northern Thailand but no further North than Louang Prabang in Laos but it was pretty damn cold this morning. I had woken in the night to put more clothes on but it didn't really help.
I walked around the town with Gabi and find the motorbike rental place where I'd heard you could hire bikes for the trip back to Chiang Mai. It seems that you can only do that in low season and since we were in high season now it was off. We were annoyed about that because the road looked so good and the scenery too. After that annoyance had sunk in we hired bikes anyway to explore the surrounding area.
That ride was interesting - In Thailand they drive on the left which suited me but not New-Yorker Gabi who seemed intent on trying to get the whole country to follow right sided ways. No harm done and in fact it was an amusing way to start the ride off 1 The Hot Springs
1 The Hot Springs
. We visited some hot springs where the water was so hot some Chinese tourists were cooking eggs in a plastic bag. We took photos and when the eggs were done we ate some - very tasty! We also found the Pai canyon which was more interesting that I expected - made more of mud than rock but still an impressive sight.
I chatted with our guest-house owner when we got back. She'd spent the end of last year dealing with two floods that had hit Pai. Both were unexpected and after the first one she was able to pay for the damage and disruption from savings. The second one had been much harder to pay for and now she was having to cope with bank loan repayments - if floods happen again this year she will be forced to sell her nice place so I hope it was just a blip.
