Today was the last day of the trek and we left our jungle huts and headed for the start of the white water rafting. The water level in the river was low so it wasn't all thrills and spills - but there was about half a dozen decent "rapids" to go through. I really enjoyed my first white-water rafting and would like to go again somewhere else if the river's waters are high. Borat had consumed a few beers before we'd set off in the raft and was not doing as he was told by our raft "captain" - a Thai guide.
After the white water rafting we were in a quieter part of the river where we could do bamboo rafting. This is a much more slow-paced activity where you just sit semi-submerged on a long thin raft of bamboo and let the current take you down stream. We had a guide walking through the water behind us and every now and then he would plunge a corner of the raft deep in to the water and see how we coped with being unbalanced. Borat thought this was great fun and conspired with the guide to make the ride as rocky as possible! I looked at the other group who had no drunken Russian or mischievous guide and were enjoying the sedate ride as they were supposed to - not fair! Most of our group stood up on the bamboo to make balancing easier but a few of us ended up in the shallow water as a result.
An hour or so later we were drying off and enjoying ice-creams. Back in Chiang Mai we had to find some accommodation and found a really cheap place run by an old English guy and an old Thai wife. In the evening we met up with three of the American guys at a nice bar on the riverside and recounted our past few days experiences.
