Today we headed to Emei Shan. It's a mountain range in Sichuan province that has a summit at 3099 metres but the best of the mountain is the hikes through the lower regions.
We intended to leave by 8am but all four of us (Arjen, Audrey, Steve and I) were really suffering from the hotpot. We sat around for another hour waiting for the next person to come back from the toilet, it seemed like we'd never leave for a while! The two hour bus ride to Emei was not the best thing to be doing with that kind of trouble. We got to Emei at around mid-day and we were met off the bus by an Entrepreneurial woman who was helpful but didn't seem to offer us a solution that didn't include a stay at her hotel "The Teddy Bear Hotel". We sat round the table discussing what kind of trip up the mountain we could do and how we could fit in the Giant Buddha at Leshan (about 30 minutes bus ride away) before returning to Chengdu for our 6pm train ticket South to Panzhihua. After considering weather conditions, trek duration etc we opted to get the bus to Leshan right away and see the Giant Buddha.
The Giant Buddha of Leshan is the biggest Buddha in the world. It's a whopping 71 metres tall, and we took a boat ride along the river so that we could get the best views of it. I was really wowed by the sight, and can understand why it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We got the bus back to Emei and stayed at the Teddy Bear Hotel. It's a really cool hotel actually and we needn't have been worried by the pressure to stay from the woman we met off the bus. I bumped into two English guys, Mark and John, that I'd met a day or so before in Chengdu and we all had beers and agreed to do the Mount Emei hike as a group of six the next morning. That would be a long day so we got to bed by 10pm ready for our 7am departure.
