At 7.15 the train jolted and two books flew off my table and bashed my head. The books had been there for four days and never done that before so I knew I better get up and see this lake. All through the train people were stirring and standing at the windows with cameras in hand. It was a misty morning but the lake looked magnificent and in the distance I could see snow topped mountains.

I went back to bed for a staggering five hours, in another three we would be at Naushki where we would go through Russian/Mongolian customs and passport control. That process ended up taking three hours and I managed to find some hot food near the platform. I had three Mongolian dumplings with meat inside, and a chicken kebab cooked over charcoal. It was just what I needed and I was very content. We finally got our passports back and the Russian guards entered our cabin and checked for hidden people before leaving.

The annoying American chap Mark's visa for Russia had expired three days ago and he didn't have that visa registered either! He was given a 2100 rouble fine - he had been taking the train to save money!
