Right in the middle of Lake Nicaragua is teh island of Ometepe which has two extinct volcanoes on it. To get there we had to get a ferry ride out that took about six hours and involved soomoe amazing sunsets over the lake. Arriving in Ometepe the place seemed quite poor, the towns were small and barely and barely had roads and there were loads of half starving horses around the place. The countryside is a lot better, especially if you climb one of the volconoes which of course involves an early start, 4am this time. It seems like staying in bed ītil seven is a lie in these days!
The hike up the volcanoe was tough, starting at 4am realņly didnīt help and it was raining down fo rth efirst few hours. We had a guide with us and without him we would have been completely lost, most of the path was just through streams and was almost straight up. Along the way we sas lots of monkeys which was cool, unfortunately I forgot my camera so not photos Iīm afraid.Eventually we did get to the top where we were greeted by the sun and a small crater like. We couldnīt see much around as we were down in the crater but it was a nice place to relax for a few hours and have a much needed siesta. By the time we got back down the volcano were absolutely filthy after walking in mud and dirt all day. Naturally he hostel didnīt have any hot water so it was difficult to get too clean and a laundrete was also badly needed. But after the hiike which was one of the toughest one day hikes Iīve done in a while all I could think about doing was relaxing in a hammock for the rest of the day, clothes could be washed tomorrow.
