After a thirteen hour bus journey from Mexico city in which I had to watch a load of movies in Spanish, I arrived in the jungle town of Palenque at 6am. Palenque is famous for Mayan pyramids and temples and there's also quite a lot of hippies here. It was easy enough to sort out accommodation out in the heart of a jungle in a mini tourist resort/hippy commune. A couple more hours sleep and then I hit the temples. The best thing about the pyramids in palenque is that they are still surrounded by jungles. This part of Mexico recieves the most rainfall in all of Mexico and it was raining almost all the time. The jungle canopy did provide some cover but there was a lot of time spent waiting for a torrential fall to clear away. It wasn't that bad really as it meant you realy had to take your time with the temples. Of course the wet conditions made everything slippery and it all nearly ended horribly when I slipt down some steps but was luckily able to stop myself after only four or five steps out of probably fifty or more down to a waterfall.
Apart from the pyramids, there's not a whole lot to do here unless you're a hippy who likes indulging in the local mushrooms so one night was enough for me, I'd have one more stop in Mexico before saying adios and moving on to Guatamela.
