We didn't put up the tent last night, but still couldn’t sleep due to the heat. Breakfast was a silent affair as we sat morosely munching our granola. That is, it was, until yet another member of the funny farm campsite we’d stayed in drove up to make more random conversation. We left rapidly when after chatting to us he drove up to Jerry  and Carol’s RV and started banging to wake them up! We definitely didn’t want to get into anymore lengthy and repetitive conversations with them. (Although having said that I expect they would have been a lot less chatty this morning as mammoth hangovers kicked in.)

Mikey had a puncture due to yet another dodgy patch failing so we’re keen to find a bike shop in today’s destination Effingham. His back axle also seems a bit dodgy, something we really don’t want to get involved with. We stopped in Pierron after only a mile buying ice and meeting some very friendly locals who took a photo of us in their new cowboy cutout.

The rest of the ride was pretty straightforward, but very tiring. We were on a quiet road which was mostly flat, but a headwind meant we could only do 11mph. We tried to have breaks every 15 miles, one of which was at Maccy’s for buy-one-get-one-free Big Macs at 11am.

After 60 miles we were extremely hot and bothered and still at least 10 miles from Effingham. It was 5.30 and obviously rush hour as all people suddenly got very grumpy with us slowing them down for a few seconds on their way home. We were abused 4 times and by the time we reached the campsite were ready to tell the people of Effingham to Eff-off!

Never mind though, we are here safe and sound and Camp Lakewood is a lovely spot. In a wood next to a lake as you can imagine. Loads of mosquitos so we’ll have to put up the tent/sauna and sweat it out tonight. It’s packet pasta and peas for supper again, but after 72 miles neither of us care, hopefully the camp shop has ICECREAM!!!!

Miles Cycled; 72 sweaty miles in to a headwind

No. of times beeped and sworn at: 4

V.ery glad to hear that you are safely out of Missouri - you have convinced me that that is somewhere I would happily miss. Hope it gets a bit cooler for you and that you have a puncture free ride to NY. I am away today and typically the rain is coming down in bucket loads - not the best weather for motor way driving!!!
Take care and I look forward to reading about your last few days of travels at some point - you have really had the most amazing year. All love Lindy

Glad you got rid of Jerry and Carol last night! To deter those unpleasant other road users perhaps you should stick the slogan 'HAVE A NICE DAY' on your backs to take the wind out of their sails the bad tempered whatsits! The heavens opend during the night and poor CJB had to get u and close the windows in my NEW CAR. I think we could be due forsome flash flooding.
Jolly peddaling LOL Jojo

Think Lindy stlll thinks you're coming back on the 21st. We're all still a bit tense with worry in quiet old Bosham - can't wait to have you both back here.
First day with our solar panels and it's tipping down!
Much love xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
