It was a slow start as I had to fix a puncture but then we were out of Eureka and looking forward to only having to cycle 50 miles instead of running 35. We had met up with the Transamerica bicycle route and soon met our first cycle tourer coming towards us. Chuck had just retired and was cycling to San Fran before accepting the role of grandfather/hedgecutter/painter decorator/babysitter and whatever else his kids could find him to do. As we chatted we saw our first live armadillo shoot across the road ahead of us – the rest have been interesting roadkill
A couple of miles on we met another chap, he was much less charismatic and looked pretty grumpy in the heat and headwind so we made our conversation brief and let him go. A corner store further along was clearly used to cyclists. She provided us with a 7 day weather report and a cyclist’s guest book to sign. It made us feel that it may have been quite nice and comfy to follow the route mapped out across America but we don’t do nice and comfy, we have our own plan.
It was a great ride with much greener surroundings. We made good time with a gentle breeze nudging us along and we reached Iola by early afternoon. We immediately found a good spot to camp, Budd the RV park owner giving us a free night, and then cycled out to find the swimming pool. The daily problem of then trying to avoid the heat for the afternoon was easily solved by another trip to the cinema. Transformers was a solid choice and bought back childhood memories of the 'robots in disguise’.
Miles Cycled: 53 and a couple more to the cinema
