Today was all about hoping we got to Clayton before my front tyre gave out. We were up at 7 and enjoyed a lovely breakfast over-looking the Prairie before setting out. I could really get used to this camping out, it's been fun, but I am seriously looking forward to a shower tonight! With a tailwind, we flew through the first 16 miles to Gladstone, where we found a fantastic shop with freshly baked bread and cookies. There was actually an RV site with hook-ups which had we not had the puncture problems last night we might have reached.

As we started to leave we saw that my tyre now had a pretty serious bulge underneath the duck tape – oh dear, still 48 miles to go. The scenery was stunning along the route, as we passed ranch after ranch and waved to lots of interested cows and horses. We’re also spotting lots of deer with their young who seem more curious than afraid. It was a very hot day as the afternoon clouds we’ve come to rely on didn’t appear. Amazingly the tyre held out, and we arrived at Clayton by 3pm. It is a tiny place and it immediately became clear we had made the right call to order the tyres, no bike shops here. Once again the staff at the KOA were lovely, and the lady even let us use her phone to call up the shippers and check the tyres were on route. They should arrive tomorrow afternoon – phew.

After that it was a very well earned and much needed shower, then trip to the supermarket where we bought some enormous and delicious steaks for supper. We’ll definitely have to get some more of those in the future, they were amazing. It feels like a big achievement to have made it here and have sorted the tyres, hopefully now we can get on with enjoying the rides without the incessant puncture interruptions!

Cycled:  65 tense miles waiting for that tyre to give up!
