The alarm went off at five and it felt as though we'd just arrived at the hotel, let alone had any sleep. The beds (a king-size one each for some reason) were incredibly comfy and we were very tempted to snooze on, but the threat of more horrific uphill dragged us up. The last thing we wanted was to be slogging away in the midday sun, knowing a gorgeous pool was waiting for us, and not being able to get there! The room was in chaos as last night in our sun-deranged state, we’d spread everything out looking for the stove. After Mikey cooked packet pasta in the bathroom, we’d eaten in bed and immediately passed out. Apparently I woke up at one point shouting that I had no idea where I was, but went back to sleep before Mikey told me. It was a disorientating room as there were a couple of dogs staying in the next room who kept barking and running around– apparently in the US pets get to go on gambling holidays too. Anyway, despite the mess, having to mend two inner tubes from yesterday, laboriously fill up all of our water carriers and work out the coffee machine, we were back on the highway at 6.30.

I had a better look at Primm Valley Resort this morning as I was a wreck last night, and it seems a pretty strange place. A gambling, fast-food and shopping oasis in the middle of a sandy desert – odd and already STINKING HOT at 6.30. I have no idea how people live like in places where the temperature is totally unacceptable apart from briefly between 5-6 in the morning!

On the road, our legs went into auto pilot and we raced through the first 11 miles to another small settlement – Jean. (We’re now looking out for Bobby and Bradley towns, but not sure we’re going to find them.) Here we were directed off the highway and to a bike path. We were nervous about taking it, but three separate sources assured us it was tarmacked and was in fact Las Vegas Boulevard, which followed the highway straight to the city. A puncture just as we were leaving (Mikey this time) delayed us briefly, and then we were back on the road, starting to feel pretty confident that we weren’t going suddenly meet a hill.

We’d been on a plateau all morning and as we continued it started to feel as if might cycle off the edge of the world. Obviously this didn’t happen, what we found instead was 19 miles of free-wheeling fun all the way to the heart of Las Vegas. It felt pretty amazing to see the city laid out before us, especially as when we arrived near the centre, it was only 9.15. Breakfast number 2 called us at that point and we headed into Maccy D’s to check out where our hotel was. When we found it was only 3 miles from where we sat, we finally felt able to pour away the 2 gallons of water we were lugging along. Here we also met a local cyclist who said that the police normally don’t mind cycle tourers on the highway, and would certainly not fine us which is good news.

Our hotel is right in the heart of the action, and we cycled past the Pyramids, a sphinx, and the Statue of Liberty and had a cheesy photo taken by the Welcome to Vegas sign, before we found it.  We knew straight away it was a great place when they told us to wheel our bikes into the lobby. They didn’t even question the fact that we were checking in at 10.15am, and the receptionist found a room on the 33rd floor for us so that we would have a really great view. The bikes were whisked off to the basement and our luggage to the bell boy and we headed straight up to the room.

It is INCREDIBLE! We took loads of photos before we messed it up with all of our dirty gear, but the huge Jacuzzi bath, sofas, balcony and kitchen with coffee maker and juicer got us pretty excited!

The rest of the day has been completely heavenly. After very long showers and some relaxing, TV watching/cool down time we decided to head out and find lunch. There is an air-conditioned walkway all the way from our hotel to the MGM Grand, where we found a massive mad casino/shopping place filled with completely crazy things. The bizarrest had to be the 'Lion Encounter’ with some lionesses lying around cuddled up to their keepers and crowds of people staring at them – in a Mall!!? Not very kind we thought and we stayed away.

We thought we might be lost in the MGM forever, but just as we were getting a bit desperate, we found the exit to the strip. Once out there we discovered why everyone was inside. The heat is RIDICULOUS. No wonder yesterday was so horrific. We had to get back inside and found a mall which had a painted sky ceiling. Had a great time in there people-watching and buying me a me bikini, before heading back to the supreme comfort of the hotel room.

The best thing about getting up at 5 is that despite all of the above, which includes a 40 mile ride, it was still only 2pm. We started to fall asleep though, so went down to the pool. After some reading and swimming we started to fall asleep there too, and have come back to the room to settle in for a night on the sofa. We can see the entire city from our balcony so are not missing anything! Will venture out to the casinos tomorrow when we’re a bit less shattered.

Thank you Foos, a fabulous wedding present, arriving at the perfect moment.

Miles Cycled:  39 in total; 20 flat then 19 downhill all the way to Sin City

Phew - heatwave has struck - completely misty morning but by 11 o'clock all clear and Echo alongside - load up with salmon, salads and wine and off to sea with Elizabeth George Olaf and CJB. It also happened to be the Classic Day Boat Open weekend so the terracee this afternoon was heaving - Jane's birthday so she was bought champagne as is only right and proper and 'Happy Birthday' was sung. I have at last managed to escape to the cool of Highfield and hope you two have got air conditioning wherever you are!
