The outside of the tent was covered in a thick frost this morning. Everybody we meet now is very impressed that we are sticking with the tent, if they had seen some of the places we have stayed in over the last few months they would understand that despite the cold we are very happy indeed to be wrapped up in our snuggly sleeping bags.  With the addition of a very generous gift of films for the laptop from our friends of last night, Andre and Hannah, we now have tent complete with cinema.

Sausage and eggs warmed us up before leaving Blenheim and cycling the short 18 miles to PIcton.  The ride was very relaxed and we arrived in the inter-island ferry port of Picton before midday.  With time to kill we took it easy in a café and bought a picnic for the ferry crossing.

The boat was delayed and the 2pm departure time turned into 3:30pm.  It was still early enough to enjoy the beauty of Queen Charlotte Sounds as we left the South Island behind us.  When we hit the Cook Strait it became pretty choppy as the Tasman Sea met the South Pacific Ocean.   I made two good dolphin sightings.  Polly doesn't believe me as every time she came out there was no action.

The light did not hold out for us to enjoy the entrance to Wellington harbour but no doubt we will see it all tomorrow as we take a day off in the capital.  Cycling into the city we were quickly reminded why the open spaces of the South Island are so magical.  A stressed out office worker took his bad mood out on us as we jumped a red light, then we checked into a rubbish hostel and because it was so late after the ferry delay we ducked into Macdonalds for an immediate eat.  First impressions of the capital not good but it is dark and late and I have decided to get myself in a grump!

Miles Cycled: 18 to catch the boat
