I've been out here twice now as an adult, and once a long time ago.  Unfortunately neither adult visit was a true New York experience.  The first time I spent a night in an uneventful neighbourhood in Brooklyn and due to a tight schedule I did not really get to see anything.

The second visit was pretty hectic.  I landed at 8AM at JFK.  I got picked up and driven into Manhattan for a quick visit to a customer and then driven back to the airport for my 6PM flight out.  It was essentially 6 hours in New York traffic, it sucked.  New York traffic is as bad as they say and based on my experience, I don't recommend driving into the city if you can help it.

My very first visit back in the day took place with my parents.  During this trip I got to go up the statue of liberty.  I guess a lot is changed since those days though.  Recently, I was suprised to learn that the same type of security you find at airports is now being employed to enter US monuments such as the statue of liberty.  Now that I think about it, it makes sense, however sending my bag through an xray machine, walking through a metal detector and the weird machine that squirts air on you in order to find bombs kind of takes away from the experience of sightseeing.  In my opinion anyway.
