We caught the van out of Machala at sunrise. The plan was to go to the Guyaquil airport and rent a car for a few days. Then drive out towards the coast and check out Salinas.
The first problem started when the driver refused to take us to the airport. We ended up hopping out of the van at the side of the highway and flagging down a cab. Now, I've seen some sketchy cars while in Ecuador, but this thing definately won the award for biggest piece of crap. I have no idea what the make and model of that car was, or how it ran, but it got us to the airport, and the driver was a very nice guy.
After doing some price comparisons, we drove away in a Volkswagen Golf. Navigating out of the city without a proper map was interesting, but once we made it to the outskirts, the way towards the coast was very easy to follow.
