David got bit by a stomach bug this week. It wasn't pretty. My system had been in great shape, but I obviously let something slip in. Luckily, the clinic took great care of me and I had an Algerian roommate who spoke very good English. Ann-Mary sent over some chicken soup (no kidding), a good book, and an iPod with a bunch of Weeds episodes on it and I was able to ignore the constant headache quite well. I think it was the chicken soup that got me over the hump, although the food from the clinic was also pretty outstanding.
We had some nanny victories this week. She was able to keep the boys occupied for longer stretches of time so we could get some work done, she made french bread pizz (per my instructions) which the boys ate, and then spaghetti with tomato sauce to which I added mozzarella cheese and called "pizza noodles" and Oscar (of all people) ate a bunch, and then when I walked her and the boys to the park she actually stayed there with them for two hours! She's really been trying to get up to speed.
We will hopefully meet up with a semi-American guy this weekend, a Serbian who's lived in the US for maybe ten years. His wife contacted our employer in the States about working at the school since he's been here about six months. She won't be coming any time soon, but she put me in touch with him.
We met another family who are sending three of their four kids to the school, a lovely bunch from Cameroon. Inch by inch, the place is feeling more bona fide. There's supposed to be a parent/community reception a week from today, so that gives us some focus and motivation. Real kids in the building (besides our own little charmers) also goes a long way toward making it real. We still have some shopping and prepping to do before the doors open on Monday, and after that there's no looking back.
