Well, the smell of the generators continues to annoy me, but I got my first look at the market today. How effing cool. Packed, jammed, crammed, teeming. Everywhere you look there are these beautiful women in these crazy patterned cloths made into the most beautiful creations. Sometimes sewn into real outfits, but sometimes just worn sarong style, wrap-around, tuck it in, fold it over. wrap a baby in it and tie 'em to your back. It was something straight outta NatGeo. Could not have navigated it without my nanny, Neita, and a lovely Schlumberger driver named Tomas. She was a pro. high-handing beggars and working the bargains for me and generally not taking any shit from anyone. Making sure I didn't get ripped off. She took me to the fish market, run by a very nice Lebanese guy. Then to the old park and save for some more Lebanese guys who just love my kids, they slipped the kids some chocolate for free, and it was like being back in Lawrence Mass. with my Syrian bretheren.
