I should mention that we aren't moving from Cambridge to Pointe Noire, first, we are moving home, to our house in western Mass. Yes, two moves in six weeks. I am trying to rid myself of everything unnecessary. How do you do that with toddlers? Every toy is meaningful is some way. For two minutes maybe, and I can never tell which one is the one they'll love best. Toys are fun and friends and stories and playdates and construction materials all rolled into one. Which ones don't they need anymore? Which ones will they look for in vain before casting their accusing eyes my way? And I'll be the guilty party who decided that that toy could be someone else's, or worse.
I keep thinking about the part in The Poisonwood Bible about the cake-mixes, which the climate had turned into concrete blocks. Who is to say what I'll look at in six months and wonder what on earth I could have been thinking.
