Passing through Lincoln NM we stopped at several of the original buildings that were turned into museums. Most of the buildings in town are historical monuments going back to the days of the Lincoln County War. The war was between two groups (Murphy's and Tunstill's which included John Chisholm); one group wanted to control and gouge the towns people for everything they could get and the other, of course, wanted to develop some competition for better prices and better living
Now it was off to Carlsbad Caverns. Road crews were constructing and resurfacing the road all the way to the visitor’s center from the main entrance of the park. What a mess! It took us forever to get there. As expected it was nice and cool inside. Since we got there right at 3:30pm we took the elevator to the cavern so we could have more time looking at the caves. There was even a restaurant in the cavern at 750 feet down under ground.
The cave was well paved and low lights made everything look beautiful.
Today we saw our first wild animals. Some elks were grazing in a meadow, then a couple of hours later I was playing dodge with a couple of squirrels in the road. Just after we passed the Texas Border there were some cows grazing on the side of the road
One terrifying thing happened…. I thought I lost my wallet. We stopped for a quick lunch at Sonic Drive Inn in Carlsbad City. When the gal came out I quickly put my wallet aside. When we arrived at the Caverns I couldn’t find the wallet. We looked everywhere. I know it had to be in the car and maybe fell between the seats or could have been tossed in the back somewhere. So we bite the bullet and went ahead into the caverns, of course this was on both of our minds the whole time. It was a major distraction from fully enjoying the tour. After returning to our car we looked again. Knowing it had to be in the car I suggested we just head to our hotel and look again when we get there. After driving for about ½ an hour I was looking at my Guardian angel, Angelica and saw her looking up. I don’t know what enticed me to look up too, however there was my wallet, I shoved it between the sun visor and the roof of the car. I have never put my wallet there before. Sure did feel better.
We stopped at the UFO Museum in Roswell, NM. We weren't to impressed, but there are plans to make the museum bigger and better in the future. Roswell was like any other city in the U.S. No aliens running around the streets and the souviner shops were expensive
Passing through Pecos TX we thought we might fill up with gas….It was $2.99 a gal. This made it one of the most expensive per gallon prices we have seen on our whole trip. I was sure Texas would have better prices. However, to redeem Texas we did get gas for $2.89 later. Still at the avg. price that we have been seeing and buying since the beginning of our trip. $2.73 was the cheapest gas we saw and that was in Modesto right after we paid $2.75.
Spending the night at the Budget Inn in Ft. Stockton, TX, not a fancy hotel, but they had free Internet access and clean rooms. The attendant was pleasant too. And yet another good day of sightseeing.
Praise God for all the beauty we have seen so far and knowing that there is more to come. God bless all the folks who we shared a passing moment with whether it was a smile, small chat or on this blog and thank Him for helping me find my wallet.
