That wasn't the smartest decision we've made. We ended up in very cold weather and discovered that half the park was closed at this time of year. The only day that we had to see the park sites, the weather was not only cold but very windy which eliminated any chance for hiking. Even at the overlooks, we were out only long enough to take photos and then get back in the car.
To be honest, what we did see of Mesa Verde didn't impress us. The only thing of interest are the Anasazi ruins that are in the park. We saw plenty of those at Canyon de Chelly, In my humble opion, Canyon de Chelly is more worthy of national park status than Mesa Verde. But then again, we didn't see Mesa Verde under the best conditions.
But we can now add another national park and another state to our trip list and the mountain views were tremendous. After leaving Mesa Verde, we overnighted in nearby Durango, CO -- a very cool town that reminded us of Ann Arbor (but with mountains!).
Southward to New Mexico...land of enchantment!
