On the way back from Sedona, we stopped near Camp Verde at the Montezuma Castle National Monument to view one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in North America.

Built around 700 AD, This 20 room high-rise apartment, nestled into a towering limestone cliff, is testament to the ingenuity and survival of the pre-Columbian Sinaguan people in unforgiving desert terrain.  When European Americans discovered these dwellings in the 1860s, they named them for the Aztec emperor of Mexico, Montezume II, due to the mistaken belief that the emperor had been connected to their construction.
