After returning from our separate vacations in the Grand Canyon and Sedona, Jim and I enjoyed a slower pace during our last days in the Mesa/Phoenix area.  On one beautiful spring day, we drove the Apache Trail (AZ 88) route to see some of the sights east of where we were staying. Much of the 80-mile loop route was unpaved, but that's no problem with our 4-wheel drive Tahoe.

This scenic drive runs between Apache Junction and Globe, AZ through an old gold mining town, the Superstition Mountains and four recreational lakes, the largest being Theodore Roosevelt Lake.  It aso includes the Tonto National Monument which has a well-preserved Sinagua Indian cliff dwelling that looks down on Lake Roosevelt.

The geologic formations along the drive were more evidence of the wonderful natural beauty of Arizona.  We were lucky to be driving the route when the wildflowers were blooming and the sky was a cloudless intense blue.  A great way to enjoy spring in Arizona!
