My sister, Pat, is a great gardener and a long-time lover of baseball.  So, it was natural that the two places Jim and I went with her while she was in the Phoenix area was to the Desert Botanical Garden and to a spring training game.  Two great springtime experiences!

Although we had previously been to a botanical garden in Tucson, the Desert Botanical Garden is far larger and diverse - over 50 acres  and home to 139 rare, threatened and endangered plant species from around the world.  Like Tucson, there was a butterfly exhibit at the gardens - a sign of the spring which was already starting here.  One of the cultural shifts I had made when I moved to Michigan was not expecting spring until late April and early May.  It was great, therefore, to start experiencing it earlier again.  We were also lucky that we were there while they had an exhibit of sculpture by Native American artist Allan Houser.  In addition, they had an installation of a glass plant sculpture by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly at the entrance to the garden.  Absolutely amazing in person - the pix (first one) doesn't do it justice.

Next...take me out to the ballgame...
