We celebrated my birthday a few days early with our trip to San Francisco. This was my second trip and Jim's first. The first time I went with my good friend Patti for a few days before a conference in Sacramento in 1990. We had a fantastic time then and I was looking forward to seeing both the city and a college friend of mine, Sanlin Cory, again. Sanlin and her husband, Greg, were terrific hosts and companions, showing us their city and sharing some of its history. We were also delighted to meet their son Haden; I’ve seen pictures of Haden growing up, but he is now a senior in high school and ready to select a college for an engineering degree. How time flies!!
Except for one day with some rain, we had perfect weather while we were there and loved exploring the city by BART (train), MUNI (bus), car and foothttp://www.architecturesf.com
We had great weather also for our ferry ride over to Alcatraz Island, which is now part of the Golden Gate National Park. Patti and I had gone there on our previous trip and I knew Jim would like it. We all have our impressions of the prison from the movies, but until you visit it, you don’t realize what an isolated setting "The Rock" is – obviously for the prisoners but also for the prison staff’s families who lived on the island. And we think we are roughing it in our trailer!!
We also explored the Haight-Ashbury area – symbol of the hippie counterculture of the late 60s and its great music -- Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead. There are still head shops and psychedelic murals on outside walls, but the area is very touristy now, catering to us baby-boomers who remember that area and its music.
We loved San Francisco and hope that we get back again. This was one of the best birthdays ever!!
