After two days of solid rain, we were greeted with a partly sunny day on this first day of October. Just in time, since this was our last full day in the Mt. Hood area and we wanted to spend some time driving in the Columbia River Gorge area.  We drove the "Historic Columbia River Highway" which parallels both the river and the more modern Highway 84.  Built in 1922, it was nicknamed "King of Roads" and is the oldest scenic highway in the US.  (For more history on the road, check this link: http://www.columbiariverhighway.com/columbia_river_highway_history.htm)

The highway includes a couple of overlooks providing panoramic views of the Columbia River Gorge and access to seven waterfalls contained in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.  The tallest is Multnomah Falls at 620 feet, 2nd tallest in the US.  We stopped at five of the seven waterfalls.  They were all fantastic, but I especially liked the upper and lower falls at Shepperd's Dell.

After completing our drive on the historic highway, we continued on to Bonneville Dam and Lock.  We stopped at the lock first and were fortunate enough to get there to see the lock in process.  After checking out the dam, we headed to the town of Hood River for a late lunch at the Hood River Brewing Company.  From there, we headed south on Highway 35 which loops around the east and south sides of Mt. Hood.  We were amazed at how different Mt. Hood looked from a week ago when there were only sparse glaciers and no snow.  Now it was covered with a blanket of snow.  I guess summer is truly over.
