On August 25th, we boarded a ferry with our car and trailer to come back to the mother country via Port Angeles, WA. While we had a wonderful time exploring our neighbor to the North, it felt good to be back in the US.  No more converting kilometers to miles and centigrade to Fahrenheit!!

Our campground was in Sequim, which is on the northern coast of Washington, half way between Port Angeles and Port Townsend.  Sequim is on the "rain shadow" side of the mountains and is, consequently, drier and sunnier.  We had great weather and took advantage of it by exploring nearby Olympic National Park.  We hiked near Lake Crescent and drove along the Sol Duc Road, where waterfalls and hot springs awaited us.

The next day, we hiked trails on Hurricane Ridge in the park which provided 360 degree views of the surrounding Olympic mountains.  Later, we drove out to Dungeness Wildlife Refuge.  We didn't have time (or energy) with the tide coming in to walk out to the end of Dungeness Spit, but the views were fantastic.

We ended our visit in the Sequim area with a day in Port Townsend.  Port Townsend is one of only three designated Historic Victorian Ports.  We loved this town that was reminiscent of some of our favorite port towns – chock full of galleries and restaurants like Saugatuck, MI and having a writer’s colony like Apalachicola, FL -- but with Victorian era buildings in both the downtown business and uptown residential areas.  Our only regret was that we were too early for their Classic Wooden Boat Festival being held the second week of September.
