After Miracle Beach, we headed to a campground in Chemainus (still on Vancouver Island). We left our car and camper trailer there and headed off the next day to Vancouver to visit Frances and Barry Needham, some friends we made on our trip to Italy.  Frances and Barry live in a great location in West Vancouver overlooking Horsehoe Bay where our ferry came in.  They were gracious hosts and tour guides over the next two days logged a lot of miles in their car showing us the greater Vancouver area.

Vancouver is hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics and we got to see the many infrastructure improvements the area has made in preparation.  We especially liked the drive up to Whistler, where many of the outdoor events will take place.  Whistler has always been a popular place for winter sports, but will undoubtedly see a surge in tourists after the Olympics – as will Vancouver.  Hopefully, that will be a good thing!

We loved the city of Vancouver.  It felt very metropolitan and yet had lots of public outdoor spaces (large Stanley Park, a dog park on the water, and an accessible waterfront for kayaking and other boating) to offset the skyscraper apartment buildings that dominate the skyline.  And it has the advantage of being in a more temperate climate than most of Canada.  What's not to like?

Two days hardly did justice to Vancouver, and we hope that someday we can get back to explore more of the city and surrounding area.
