Our first daytrip was to the southwest tip of Portugal, what was once thought of as the end of the world. The place actually looked like it too - exactly like that Newfoundland commercial on TV at home where they say that Newfoundland was thought to be one of the corners of the earth.
We also found a really nice beach near there that we went back to on another day. Even though it was one of the nicest we have seen, there were only about 20 people on the entire beach. It was a stretch of sand about 250 meters long, with some pretty impressive cliffs surrounding the entire thing.
On Wednesday we took a day trip to Seville, Spain, which is about a 2.5 hour drive from the condo we are staying at
This evening Mom and I went to a bullfight in Albufeira. In true hippie style, we didn't want to go to one in Spain (or Mexico) because of the whole killing-the-bull-for-entertainment side of it, but apparently in Portugal, they release the bulls out to pasture after they are done. I guess they might just kill the bulls after the show, but that's not much different from the slaughterhouse anyway, at least it's not in front of a crowd. Anyway, it was pretty interesting, although I started feeling like it was a bit rigged - the guys have fast horses and they just ride in circles to confuse the bull - so I cheered for the bulls instead. After the guys on the horses finish their part, 8 or 10 guys line up in the ring with no protection at all, and challenge the bull to charge. This was definitely the most entertaining part, as the guy at the front of the line goes flying when the bull hits him at full speed, then gradually the whole trainwreck of people slows down and the guys get the bull under control. The whole bullfight was a pretty neat experience, but probably not something I will do again soon.
Well, that's probably about it for now, tomorrow we're leaving Portugal and driving to Granada, Spain.
