We spent 5 nights here at this beautiful resort, Rog Lee and Amy had booked diving and I was going to read sunbath and relax. We had breakfast each morning in the company of the local very friendly cats, they were usually waiting for you on your balcony in the mornings when you got up. For breakfast we had a choice of cereal, eggs done numerous ways, toast and fruit, a good way to start the day. The very fat but small cats would hang around waiting for some of the milk left over from the cereal.
While the rest went off for their am dive I would go and sit on the powdery sand beach and by the time they were back a couple of hours later I was ready for some shade
See Rogers's notes on diving.
Diving on Gili Air
The diving on Gili Air was not spectacular as the coral and marine life has been destroyed. However sometimes you had some nice little bits that hadn’t. The best of the diving from my perspective out of the 8 dives I did were Bounty (This is an area where a 10 year old wreck of one of the fast boats that go between Lombok, Gili, and Bali can be found) There are shoals of Big eye, Chinese sweetlips and others hiding in the structure and an amazing amount of new hard and soft coral has started to grow all over, which is encouraging to know that if people look after the area it will repopulate. We did see quite a lot of Turtles, Nudibranches, Stone fish, Cleaner shrimp and an impressive Frog fish, I would say we saw some Pigmy sea horse’s but with my eye sight I need to take a magnifying glass in future!!!
The other good dive was shark point where we did see three 2 – 2.5m long Black tip reef sharks that were well fed and quite inquisitive circling us for more than 3 minutes as we struggled to stay in position with a current running
There are some nice snorkelling points around each island where it’s not uncommon to see a turtle; however you have to be careful at certain times of the tides as the currents can be quite fierce.
In the evenings we would go and eat again, have a few cocktails at one of the venues offering "Happy Hours". We meet some interesting locals who explained their culture to us, how the island had developed into the tourist trade from what was a solely fishing community. There was one lady who we were enchanted by, she was Indonesian, from this island, her father had travelled to Lombok to find a wife, so that he didn’t have to marry a cousin [the community was that small]. She was mid 40’s and strikingly attractive, she had not gone to school being the oldest child of 8 she had had to look after her siblings. Even though no schooling education she had life education and it was obvious that she had a business head as she had purchased land, paying in instalments, was running a very successful up market beach restaurant, the food was really good as were the cocktails, we went back a few times. She told us the story that she had been married when young and had 2 grown up children however, her husband had wanted to take another wife, [they were Muslim and that’s ok to have more than one wife] she though was not happy about this and so she had ran back to her parents. They were not happy and sent her back. She had said that she would keep running away so she did leave him and her parents accepted this and she got a divorce. Now she has a new husband he is English from Cornwall and she had proposed to him after 3 weeks, she told us that she had told her parents that she has meet her new husband but she had not actually told him yet that he would be marrying her! She said that she had wanted an ugly man this time who would be glad to have her and also he can’t run away as he has only 1 leg!! We meet him and it’s not true that he is ugly, but he does have 1 leg.
