My friend Elise from URI is studying in Paris this semester so she came to visit me for a few days.  She is a great friend who plays rugby with me and we also go to the bible study on campus together.  Her train got in late Wednesday night and I had to work on Thursday for a half day but we got to spend a lot of time together.  On Thursday I gave her a small tour of Regensburg, and it was a beautiful day!! All of the students were laying outside on the island listening to music, playing sports and just having fun.  We sat down in front of the theater and had a Thurn und Taxis beer and pretzel to relax.  She made delicious crepes for dinner (and dessert).

On Friday we decided to take the train to Deggendorf, just off of the Danube river and then to Passau, right next to the Austrian border.
Deggendorf is a very small town but we were able to walk around most of the old part of the city in a few hours.  We saw the town hall and many churches.  On church was dedicated to Mary's assumption into heaven and I loved the colors of the inside of the church.  There was also a few different areas where the stations of the cross were presented (inside and outside).  We found a path up a hill behind the church and got some great photos of the town.  Then we walked back to the train station and rode to Passau.

Passau is the city on the point of land where the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers meet.  We walked around for a while to get our bearings.  Then we found St. Stephen's cathedral where the world's largest pipe organ is located (second only to a larger organ in LA).  Next to the town hall there is a high water line that shows the heights of the Danube river when it flooded, Elise and I would have only survived the lowest line!  Then we walked across the Danube bridge to walk up the side of the mountain to the fortress Veste Oberhaus for the first view of the city.  Unfortunately my camera died at this point but Elise got some great photos.

Then we walked back doooowwwwnn into the city, across the city, across the Inn river bridge to the other side.  We finally found the entrance to the stairs....a lot of stairs, 318 to be exact up to the pilgrimage church Mariahilf.  We took a long break at the top for more photos.  Then we walked down and at a real German meal at a beergarden.  We were exhausted after the ride home and even the next day.

Elise had a train back to Paris from Munich so we spent the morning in Munich, also May Day and a huge FC Bayern soccer game.  It was another great day and we saw some things that I had never seen before in Munich and I wish my batteries were charged.  I was so happy she could come and visit me and I hope to visit her in Paris, and we might also be planning a trip to Salzburg where the Sound of Music was filmed!!!!!  Enjoy the pictures!
