Friday 4 June

Today we left Dodgeville, Wisconsin headed for Chicago. We cross into Illinois and are welcomed by the most underwhelming state sign seen so far. We get good instruction on how to find the Best Western motel at O'Hare. As we approach we have eyes darting here and there and yes you guessed it, we miss the turn and end up going around in circles continually passing our turnoff but not able to get on to it! We eventually find our way to the Hertz drop off (hope we are as successful when we drop the car at Hertz JFK) and get instructions to the motel. We decided to stay at O’Hare and catch the train to downtown rather than pay $400 a night for downtown hotels. We figure the saving over three nights, $1,100, could be spent better elsewhere!!

The afternoon of arrival we travel into Chicago on the Blue Line and find our way to an architectural sightseeing tour via the Chicago River that passes thru the city. We learn a lot about the history of Chicago which is very interesting. Stephen is very impressed with Chicago and when he returns home he will read the beautiful photo book on Chicago architecture (a present from Sarah) with renewed interest. Annette makes a booking for a Segway tour tomorrow and the excitement builds.

There will be many photos of buildings to follow.

Saturday 5 June

Up early and into the city. We undertake a walking tour recommended in the Lonely Planet before our afternoon Segway. Rain tries but doesn’t dampen our enthusiasm to see as much of this great city as we can. The rain was short lived and we had a sunny afternoon.

We arrive at Steve’s Segway Tours at the corner of Monroe and Columbus and join our fellow Segwayons for lessons on how to drive these contraptions. Steve is very forthright in his teaching but he does it with a good sense of humour. When he tries to teach Stephen and Annette his voice starts to get a little louder as we fail to heed his instruction."No Stephen don’t bend your knees, when stopping  don’t hunch over, stand tall and drop the butt!!) Eventually, exasperated, he tells us to go off and practice and amazingly when not required to perform for him we finally master the Segway sufficiently to be let us loose on the unsuspecting public. What an absolute buzz these machines are! We spend about 2 hrs cruising around the city close to Lake Michigan. For those that haven’t tried a Segway we recommend you do so if the chance presents itself. Stephen fell off twice and caused a little embarrassment. Our tour guide took many photos of A& S which can be seen below. Please have a look at the movie to see the fun we had. We had a Chicago style dog midway thru the tour which was different! Tasty!

During the tour our fellow Segwayons, who are locals, recommended we try the famous Chicago deep base pizza at Pizzanos. They point out the restaurant down a street off Michigan Ave and we duly note, or so we thought! Having parked our Segaa’s we head for Pizzanos. We walked 2 mile down Michigan looking down each side street for our pizza shop without success! We walked back 2 miles and one more block and eureka there it was!!! It was worth the effort. Photo there somewhere.

Sunday 6 June

Last day in Chicago and we take the on- off bus to learn many more things about this city.Eg where Oprah did live, where Oprah lives now etc etc.

We then have lunch at the top of the Hancock building which provides a bird’s eye view of the city and the storm that rolled in whilst we lunched.

We then strolled down to Buddy Guys Legends which is a long established blues club. We ate our Jumbo Gumbo whilst enjoying the music on offer. Blue line back to motel for well earned rest and preparation for our trip to Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Overall we loved Chicago.Annette still has a soft spot for Wyoming

Sounds like you are still having a blast! Was at WPH this afternoon and they were all asking about your trip - so I can go back in the morning and tell Barb & Ann that you have just left Chicago.

Just one question - did I read correctly that you ate dog??

Great to see you enjoying yourselves and interesting to hear about parts of America that a lot of tourists dont often visit. At first I could not work out what a Segway was and thought you were picking up something like a Winnebago which I thought was strange in Chicago. Then it twigged. Here come the tourists! Cheers.

Great photos, loved the ones from atop Hankock. The segwaying looks like a lot of fun but I am not sure that I would manage to stay upright. Chicago looks very interesting and it is obviously a lot warmer than our 12 - 13 degrees.

you wouldnt be able to master the segway if you applied the same lack of balance you do when you play a golf shot!!

Hawks won against Crows by 47 points.

we know the feeling of not taking the correct turn off the freeways and going in circles.

Dear Annette and Steve, Great to get all of your blogs, really enjoying your travels. Makes us want to go to the US again. You can go on a Skeg in NZ next time, Christchurch and Queenstown. Love all the food shots, hope you are getting plenty of exercise, that is my biggest worry on holidays. 1kg a week is a worry when you get back. We are leaving on Saturday 19 June for our big trip, will not be doing a blog as we don't know how to do it. See you when we are all at home. Love Faye and Tony
