The days in Spain remain very warm, sunny and easy for touring. Our destination today will be Salamanca where we will stay 2 nights.

Shortly after leaving Bilbao we stop at the town of Vitoria-Gasteiz. This ancient Basque city has many attractions and time was spent wandering amongst the old town.

We stop for a light lunch and liquid refreshment at Laguardia -  a gateway for experiencing the Rioja wine region and a good example of a walled village that has not changed much since the 13th century.

This wine region has many boutique wineries (bodegas) and would be an area one could spend weeks just exploring and trying all the varieties on offer.

A brief detour and stop later in the day at the Monastery Valvenera and we decide that we have run out of touring time. We put our blinkers on before winding our way back to the A62 - the most direct route to Salamanca from where we were.

We arrive late at our hotel, scoff down a plate of food from their café and head off for our night of slumber.

The next morning we are up bright and early, and after a hearty breakfast make our way to the University (old) town of Salamanca. It is vibrant with many young people living and studying within the town, and it is a refreshing change to see so many of the old buildings being utilised by the university.

We had originally decided that we would seek out a nice restaurant for our evening meal, however our first taste of Spanish rain put a damper on our desire to venture out. The hotel's café was looking good again and we felt justified since we were exhausted from a big day anyhow.
