Flag of Spain  , Basque,
Tuesday, September 3, 2013

After reluctantly leaving San Sebastian this morning, we head west across the top of Spain toward Bilbao. The drive over what is known as the Basque Biscay Coast passes through towns such as Bakio, Bermeo, Gernika and others. These localities are packed with surprises and in particular unique attractions.

The most spectacular place on the Cantabrian coast is San Juan de Gaztelugatxe - a declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
There are 231 steps and a narrow rocky bridge to access the shrine, however we settled just to observe it from above as the walk was looking a little arduous in our frail conditions.

Once we had arrived in Bilbao and checked into the hotel, we set out on foot for a bit of sightseeing. As with all Spanish towns we had so far been to, the architecture continued to amaze with detail and materials.

Soon we had arrived at the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum, which is a masterpiece in architecture itself. The displays and exhibits inside were varied and interesting but the actual building was just amazing.

A walk along the river brought us to the old city, where we sought out the Plaza Nueva in search of a suitable place for dinner. The plaza was full of families enjoying an evening out, but the children (others not ours) were proving most annoying so we headed back toward the hotel and on route stopped at a quiet little restaurant where we ate in peace before retiring for the night.
