Before we do any touring today, we have arranged to meet Elisha, our friend’s daughter who is working in Stockholm on an exchange with her accounting firm.
Against my better judgement we take the ship’s shuttle from the pier to the drop off point in town. Normally, it would be a brisk 20 - 30 minute walk and would be a refreshing start to the day, however democracy prevailed and we boarded the 8.30 AM shuttle for the 8 - 10 minute drive to town.
Since I had arranged our rendezvous for 9.15 AM, I was sure I had covered all contingencies.
The shuttle did not leave until 8.45 AM and no sooner had it exited the port gates, the traffic lane the driver selected decided to stop moving. 15 minutes later and 200 metres up the road, I had had enough. I (politely) asked the driver to open the door and I exited the vehicle to ensure I could meet Elisha as arranged.
I was only 3 minutes late for Elisha and 10 minutes later, the shuttle pulls into the drop off point – nearly one hour from when we had boarded (and about 1 mile from where the ship was docked).
After about an hour or so, we bid Elisha farewell and began the day’s touring of this truly beautiful city.
The Gamla Stan (Old Town) took up most of our day as we walked and explored the sights. Whilst there were other sights on different islands, time was now short and we spent the final half hour looking at a few of the shops along the main shopping strip – something in hindsight we could have done without as there was nothing much of interest there.
Since we had the return portion of our shuttle ticket and the last shuttle was about to leave, we hurried along to the pick-up point where we at least got some value from the ticket purchased that morning.
The journey out of port is very picturesque and whilst sitting on the back deck watching the scenery go by, we run into Frank's (neighbour) daughter, Francesca. What a small world!
After an exhausting 5 days of touring, we settle into the evening with a late meal and show, knowing that our next port of call in 2 days will be our point of departure from this 27 day cruise.
