Brno, population and area, is the second largest city in the Czech Republic, the largest Moravian city, and the historical capital city of the Margraviate of Moravia.
After arriving and settling in, we started our walk for the Old City - no more than 10 minutes away. We passed a large gun shop that displayed many wares in its front window. It seemed odd to have such an aggressive display of merchandise in what seemed to be just an ordinary shop-front display and a door entry open for any interested passers by.
Under a railway bridge and up a hill and we were in the Old City. We spent the next few hours exploring the sights in the usual manner before taking a coffee break in a centrally located street cafe.
"We'll sit here" says Gail. "No, it's better here". "Wait, over here!". "No, there are smokers there - this is better". "Actually, over there will be just fine". "Oooooohh! I had to sit on the chair that just happened to have a pool of water on it. Now I want to move in under the shades where the seats will be dry".
After another hour or so we had had enough walking so we went back to the hotel for the car and drove to a couple more sights further afield and outside of the Old City. First there was The Jewish Cemetery of Brno - founded in 1852, a protected national monument and the largest Jewish cemetery in Moravia. Next was the Spilberk Castle - built in the 13th century it is situated atop a large hill that affords magnificent views of the city below.
By now it was nearing dinner time, so we drove back to the hotel, parked the car and walked back to the Old City where we chose a pleasant restaurant with outdoor seating overlooking a small cobblestone square. It was very serene until the heavens opened and we were forced to finish our meal inside.
A short taxi ride later and we were safely in our hotel room. Whilst the night was young, we weren't and a recuperative sleep was needed for our planned adventures the next day.
