After Auschwitz, we kept travelling west across the border from Poland into Czech Republic. We reached Ostrava, our next accommodation stop, mid afternoon and after checking in, took a walk in what we thought was the direction toward the old town. After about 20 minutes it was obvious we were not going where we thought we were. We retraced our steps and followed an information sign's arrow that pointed to a large town hall type building. Since there were not many (if any) tourists around, it was becoming obvious that the elusive information shop/booth/whatever was not going to be easy to find. After a bit of fingerpointing and gabble by some locals we found ouselves inside the town hall building's lift on the way to the 3rd floor. We alighted into a civic office with a couple of people behind a desk. After some correspondence in Czech and English (us English, them Czech) the younger male spoke English and produced a map before proudly espousing for the next 10 minutes on all the highlights of his wonderful town.
Being the seasoned travellers we now were, we declined the offer to pay for the ride to the top of the town hall tower (not very high) to view what was obviously a lot of industrial land, and thanked him for all the information (and map) before descending the elevator to street level where we proceeded more confidently in the direction of the old town.
After 15 minutes we found ourselves in the town's square. Whilst Ostrava may have some unique attractions if one was keen enough to forage for them, they weren't obvious enough for us as we headed back to our hotel for a lazy afternoon and early dinner before preparing for tomorrows drive to Brno.
