Where I stayed
Den Gamle Kobmandsgard
Upon checkout, there was now a receptionist and what appeared to be a manager. We finalised the account and bid them farewell. They did make mention that it was their off season, but it was strange that they had taken the booking in the first place as I am sure the food and wage bill would not have been covered by our accommodation charge. The Mols Bjerge national park is a beautiful spot with some amazing points of interest
Since we are travelling back to the East coast today and quite a way south, we decide to take the main highway and drive straight to our nights accommodation rather than meander along the daisy road.
We are staying in a B & B in Ribe. It is the oldest extant Danish town, is in southwest Jutland and has a population of just over 8,000.
We arrive into Ribe reasonably early and locate our B & B where we have a reservation. I go to the front door and it is open so I step inside. There is no one around (again) and I step back outside. It is then that I notice a sign on the door stating that for contact I should make a phone call to the number on the sign. What is it with these Danes? Don’t they know they are meant to be in the ‘service’ industry?
I enter the B & B again and have a good look around for a telephone, internet connection or any other device or means of making contact with the owner. No luck
We decide to drive around to try our luck for open (unsecured) networks and stop outside a pub that looks promising. No luck there, but a man comes out and asks if he can help. We explain our dilemma and he listens sympathetically. “No problems” he says (in broken English), here is the password to my pub’s network. You may use it to solve your problem.
In no time we have spoken to the owner of the B & B and he explains all the procedures and we can just go to our room (as we already had), make ourselves comfortable and he would see us later that evening.
With the problem solved we decided to continue driving slowly around Ribe for a bit of orientation before returning to the B & B.
“Look!” Gail exclaims, “isn’t that John and JoAnn, our new friends from Savannah and the cruise?
If there had have been a lottery office open and handy I would have rushed in to buy a handful! What were the chances of running into them in a remote Danish town, one week after saying goodbye and where both parties were going unknown (to each other) separate ways ?
After a long chat and bidding them farewell (again) we returned to the B & B to meet the owner before stepping out for a look around on foot and finally a bite to eat.
