Soon it was time to check into our night’s accommodation in the town of Lemvig. We negotiate the narrow streets of this little village and arrive outside the hotel, ready for a well-earned break from our day of green fields and coastal views.
“That’s strange” I think as the hotel sign appears faint on the wall and the windows are very dusty and smeared
For the next 30 minutes, we drive around this small town looking for alternate accommodation, or even a Wi-Fi connection that will give us access to the outside world and the information to make the desired choice.
With time progressing the decision is made to drive to the nearest larger town (that is likely to have a McDonalds) so easier and alternate arrangements can be made.
Arriving in Holstebro we circle the streets looking for hotel signs, B & B signs, McDonald signs, or any sign that would give an indication of civilisation. I am not sure if it was our Danish (zero to nothing) or just a complete lack of understanding of how it all works, but we were coming up with dead ends everywhere we turned. The final dead end was opposite a restaurant (life at last!) so we searched for ‘available networks’ on our phones on the off chance someone had omitted to put a password on their network
Bingo! We were on line and within minutes Trip Advisor had given us the location of a nearby hotel. The address was typed into the GPS and we were off with a sense of relief and high expectations.
We arrive at the Hotel Royal in the centre of the town and proceed to the reception. There is no one in attendance and in fact the whole area was closed, but there was a note taped to the wall stating “for any attention please use phone on the wall”. Not panicking yet, I dialled the number, only to receive a recorded message in Danish!
Whilst mulling over the next plan of action, a person enters the foyer and makes the same phone call. I hear a conversation taking place in Danish, so plead with the caller not to hang up and to pass the phone over when he has finished.
A few minutes later I am removing a hidden key, taped under the counter that will access a hotel room in case of such situations
Whilst the room was average and the rate ok, it could have been a backpacker’s bed by this point. We wearily ended our day determined to make tomorrow a better day.
