First we have a quick look around Jacksonville Beach in the daylight then continue driving for our next attraction stop. Driving south along Highway 1 is most pleasant as we pass through areas such as Ponte Verde with its beach mansions and many lush golf courses. As we drive the land on either side of the road narrows. The houses and golf courses disappear as ocean on one side and swampy marshlands on the other become more prevalent. We stop at a small beach parking lot just off the highway and take in the uniqueness of this narrow tract of land
We arrive at St. Augustine, America’s oldest city. It was founded in 1565 by Pedro Menendez de Aviles and is a unique city filled with colonial Spanish neighbourhoods, magnificent buildings and a charm all of its own. We park the car and stroll around for a few hours. It is like we have been instantly transported to Spain and are wandering around the old cities.
From St Augustine we find the Interstate 95 and head straight for our night’s accommodation. Tomorrow we shall check out the Kennedy Space Centre.
18 April 2012
We enquire at the hotel reception about the tours at the Kennedy Space Centre and are informed that it will take all day. Since we have deleted the West coast of Florida from our itinerary, we have some spare time up our sleeves, so we add another night to our hotel stay and set out for a full day of touring at the Kennedy Space Centre (KSC).
After a KSC Bus Tour, an IMAX theatre presentation in 3D about the Hubble telescope, a shuttle launch experience in a simulator (what a ride!), meandering through the rocket garden and other out of this world sights, we are totally spaced out and decide to spend the rest of the afternoon driving to Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach where the iconic Ron Jon surf shop is located
We head back to the hotel, deciding to call it a day. We had intended to try to fit in an air boat ride but are too weary. A good night’s sleep and an early start will be the solution to experience the marshy wetlands (akin to everglades) before we return to the Interstate 95 on our final leg south to Miami.
