After re-joining the Parkway we had been driving for about 1 hour when there is a detour due to road works. We leave the Parkway and stop in a town called Sparta to decide whether to continue following the detour or whether to choose a different route.
Gail needs to go to the gas station across the road so while she is gone I start to reconfigure the GPS.
About 10 minutes pass and I am getting a little concerned as there was a bunch of Harleys parked at the gas station and I am imagining Gail coming out wearing a leather jacket whilst declaring her desire to be free!!
My little cloud above my head pops and Gail jumps into the car and declares we now have a place to stay if we are going to Wisconsin. The short story is that Gail, in her usual manner, had struck up a conversation with a bikie inside and he turns out to be a nice old retired gentleman travelling with his wife and had given Gail his card for if we were ever in his hometown we would be welcome to stay
Deciding not return to the Parkway for another hundred miles or so, we head off south toward the town of Boone where we would then re-join the Parkway. Along the new route we pass through ranges that are totally and continuously covered with Xmas trees. An amazing spectacle to see!
Once back on the Parkway we continue to see many beautiful vistas, the beginnings of some flowering blooms, parks, ponds and a short diversion at the 355 Mile Marker takes us up to the peak of Mount Mitchell - the highest peak in Eastern USA with an elevation of over 2000 metres.
After another long day of mountain driving we arrive at our hotel in Asheville and then go downtown to have a meal at a local micro-brewery named The LAB (Lexington Avenue Brewery).
Tomorrow is to be our 3rd and last leg to complete the Parkway drive but we shall see!
