We take the main freeway route toward Lancaster and travel quickly in an attempt to reduce the time spent on country by-ways. At a point around 20 miles from Lancaster the countryside changes to farmland and this is our cue to reset the GPS to “scenic route – avoid freeways”. The next exit looms large and our friendly tour guide announces “take slip road to exit freeway, and turn right”.
The scenic route takes us through the heart of Amish country – down Amish Road, past the Mennonite church and graveyard, school, houses and farms and eventually into the town of Bird in Hand. Since our circuitous route had bypassed the town of Intercourse 4 miles back, I did suggest to Gail that ‘2 in the hand ……….’ But she would not have a bar of it and I was instructed to continue eastward to Paradise
Passing through Lancaster we stop close to where a mounted policeman stands next to the Civil War Soldiers & Sailors Monument (1874) in Penn Square. Further down the road we see the home (called Wheatland) of America’s 15th President.
Coming to the town of Hershey we follow the brown road (Chocolate Avenue) to the Hershey Factory. Just like a scene out of Willy Wonker we indulge ourselves in the fantasy but refrain from any further indulgence other than the free samples for taking the basic tour.
Passing through Harrisburg - PA's state capitol, we miss an attraction on 3rd Street but lose interest as we are tired and irritable after a full day and lots of driving.
At Carlisle we are pleasantly surprised to be given a suite at the Hotel (I think they read the Marriott room rate discount sheet incorrectly and thought we were franchise owners). After a quick look around Carlisle (not much to see) we bought some take out Chinese food and headed back to our suite to dine in style.
