Before leaving Tarrytown, we drive down to the waterfront (Hudson River) to have some breakfast. There wasn't much open but Dunkin' Donuts had a good breakfast deal. While we were there we checked out the latest condo's being built on the river. Being a 'commuter town' for New York (30 minutes by train to Grand Central) the prices were quite reasonable.

Travelling along the highway to New York City (NYC) I ponder how polite US drivers are and how there seems to be no road rage. I am so deep in thought that I nearly miss the exit to Mid-Town Manhattan. I swing hard to the right and quickly compute - left or right at the fast approaching intersection. HONK!! TOOT!! F*%@#. Yes, I was in NYC and must have just passed through some dimensional warp at the highway exit. I move to the far right, grip the wheel with both hands and concentrate intently on the GPS instructions lest I make any wrong moves.

By the time (2.00 pm) we arrive at our hotel on West 40th near 8th I am an expert (you can take the boy out of the cabbie but not the cabbie out of the boy!) The room won't be ready until 4.00 pm but I park the car away for the duration of our stay and Shanks Pony will now be our mode of travel.

We pack in the activities: explore Mid-Town, ferry to Staten Island, dinner at Quality Meats restaurant (Quality Meats, the new restaurant created by Fourth Wall Restaurants and designed by AvroKO) with Kate Way's brother Pete and Michele (the new Mr & Mrs York now living in North Carolina) and a 22 block walk back to the hotel amid a throng of characters, buskers, touters and tourists that are dashing, diverting and dazzling against a backdrop of a never closing, energy throbbing city.

Next day's activities are started with a walk along The High Line - a public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated 30 feet above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side, then a continuation of walking and exploring from Mid Town through Greenwich, Soho, Tribeca and eventually arriving at Wall Street. Needless to say Shank's Pony was now ready for the cannery so the nearest subway entrance was sought for a quick return to West 40th. There was dinner to be had and a show to be seen. It was Rock of Ages at the Helen Hayes theatre on West 44th, and we had premium seats given to us by our girls for Xmas.

After the final curtain call we poured out of the theatre with the flow of attendees and weaved our way 2 blocks back to our hotel refuge.
Whilst the past day and a half was fantastic, we were ready to pass back through the dimensional warp to continue our journey south.
