We drove non-stop to Newport, Rhode Island as we had a lot to see and not enough time to see it. First port of call was the port. Not much happening here - the boats were all wrapped up in white Glad Wrap and the harbour was relatively quiet. Next was a visit to the Touro Synagogue - America's oldest synagogue, which was founded in 1658 by Jews fleeing the inquisition and as George Washington would say in 1790 in a letter to the congregation in Newport: "The new nation gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance". As with most museums, tourist attractions and heritage sights at this time of year - the Synagogue was closed. We continue along Touro Street which turns into Bellevue Avenue - the avenue of mansions, most of which overlook the Atlantic Ocean in the direction of Bermuda. Bellevue Avenue then turns into Ocean Drive - a drive along the cliff tops and winds its way back to Newport Harbour passing Fort Adams State Park. One could easily spend days exploring this entire all-consuming township, but time is afoot and we turn northward enroute for Portsmouth NH.

Along the way we have many seaside towns to visit, however as is the usual case, it won't be possible to see them all and the modus operandi is to see what can be seen up until around 5.30 pm and the rest of the daylight hours will be spent on the fastest freeway to enable us to get to our acommodation before dark.
