I left San Pedro on Wednesday morning catching the launch back to Panajachel. From there it was a 3hr chicken bus ride to Quetzaltenango. This is Guatemalas second largest city and the centre of the Quiche Maya people. The city is at 2335m and surrounded by 2 volcanoes. It is a lot less crowded than Antigua with a small central park surrounded by colonial buildings. I was stopping here to break the journey to Mexico.
I found modest lodgings for $4.50US a night - basically the room just consisted of a bed - and went out to explore the city in the afternoon ending up in the park just watching the world go by.
The next day i wanted to head to Fuentes Georginas, a natural spa heated by hot sulfur springs. I caught a bus to Zunil, the nearest town and saw the pick ups that take the tourists up to the springs. Unfortuneately there had only been 1 other person in the last 3 days or so the driver told me and to take just one person up and back the 10km road to the springs was 3 times as much as my 3hr bus ride here. Oh well im sure there will be other hot springs. I walked into Zunil before heading back to look at the church, which was pretty impressive
Tommorrow is my first land border crossing hopefully of many and they can go even way - a breeze or a nightmare depending on the mood of the immigration offical. So heres to the former
