We said our good-byes to Las Vegas and after grabbing a couple of coffees and stocking up on water supplies we headed north through the Nevada desert. We passed by nuclear test grounds, Indian reservations, a prison and at least one Air Force Base. We found ourselves back in Beaty at lunchtime and parked in the shade of some trees to enjoy a sandwich. Then it was more of the same - empty straight roads for mile after mile. See the video for just 2 minutes worth!

Prostitution is legal in Nevada and an ever present feature of life in Las Vegas. What I wasn't expecting as we headed through the desert were occasional 'brothel ranches' offering a 'full range of services'. I guess there's not much else to do!

Eventually it was time to leave Nevada and head west and back into California which we did by a series of spectacular mountain passes the highest of which was 7,500'. On the final pass there was an ancient pine cone forest which only grows at a certain altitude and in particular conditions. The trees and the outcropping rock were amazing.

We dropped down into Big Pine and had a break before continuing north along Three Flags Highway passing by many 'hot springs' as evidence of the geological activity of this region. After more than six hours in the saddle we rolled into Mammoth Lakes. This is primarily a skiing resort - there are still piles of snow around in the town which lies at 7,880' (2402m). As it's between seasons not everything is open and we had to wait for a table the one restaurant that was- Slocums. As it turned out, this really is a first-class restaurant with very friendly staff. The menu and wine list are extensive and I hope we can dine there again this evening.

I'm not sure if it's the altitude or the late nights catching up with us but were glad to turn in for the night.
