Farmer's Market

My first day in Canada ever and a trip to a Framer's Market in the Mennonite Community of St Jacob's Ontario. I am very grateful to my hosts for the day, for their generosity and enthusiastic engagement with the Market - it was a great way to see a little of old Canada.

The notion of a Farmer's Market in UK terms is a collection of local farmers and producers selling their wares at exorbitant prices. As you can see from the pictures, things are a little different over here! Not only can you buy fresh fruit and veg, Maple Syrup, baked goods and cows!

The area has a great many Mennonite farming families who embrace a lifestyle that is .... less accepting of the trappings of modern life. They sell their wares with enthusiasm - and there are a lot of them. Maple Syrup and Patchwork Quilts predominate.

As well as the amazing smells from the food stalls were the less amazing smells from the animal stalls! There were several hundred cattle for sale too. The auction room was mystifying - but I think I escaped without buying a cow. The auctioneer was completely beyond understanding but seemed to be selling the cattle. The dudes in hats in the pictures are largely from the Mennonite tradition.

Afterwards we went into St Jacob's for lunch and a look around the local shops including the remodelled Mill featuring an impressive shop selling Scots food and knick-knacks. There was also an amazing pottery, not to mention the model train layout.

As usual, more pictures here.

A wonderful introduction to Canada. Tomorrow it's off to Toronto.
