So, here I am sitting on the Amtrak Acela Express in Penn Station New York waiting to depart to Boston. Big comfortable seats, free wifi, by the window, looking forward to the next 3 hours and 40 minutes of New England whizzing by at speeds of up to 150 mph.

Travelling in a new country multiplies anxieties about missing connections or simply ending up at the wrong destination. This is a natural function of unfamiliarity - but everything does work and is well co-ordinated. Nevertheless, it remains a challenge for a control freak! I'm looking forward to picking up a rental car in Boston - so that I can sit behind the wheel and (nominally) be in charge of my own destiny!

It's a pity that the ride out of NYC is through a tunnel as it means I will be missing my last chance to see the unique and great skyline of this metropolis. I am looking forward to emerging into daylight and enjoying the views of the coastline as we travel north-east towards Boston.

I am also looking forward to seeing Kate, Michael and Georgia again and to acquainting myself with Concord as I travel to the State of New Hampshire for the first time. I wonder it compares to old Hampshire?

We have just emerged into bright sunshine in Queens - I think we are running parallel to the LIRR track that has become familiar over the past week. Now we're speeding through The Bronx with the East River giving way to Long Island Sound in the distance. We have onboard GPS tracking.
