After a very relaxing two days in San Jose, we slowly packed up our gear and loaded our bikes into the car that would take us back out to the coast. We got to Santa Cruz and as soon as we found the sea, we seemed to lose the sunshine and get engulfed by the fog again! Our cycle today was on mostly flat road so was a great warm up for our muscles before the big hills of Big Sur tomorrow. We cycled through rolling fields and the Artichoke capital of America- exciting times. As we cycled into Monterey we were joined by another cyclist who decided to guide us into the town as he had nothing better to do. He left us in the center of town and as it was still quite early, we thought we'd hang out before heading to the campsite. We found a farmer's market and had a walk around Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf. When we got to the campsite we found a very packed hiker/biker site and met 3 very entertaining men. 1 was a University professor who taught English and as I'd done an American Literature module we had a great bonding session! Especially as he'd just been to a lecture by Tim O'Brien on one of my favourite books! The other two were in their 60s and had ditched their wives to go on a boys tour. They were knocking back the whisky and telling us some great stories including the details of a hill in Santa Barbara where they've buried a bottle of whisky and some weed for them to enjoy the day before their wives pick them up, and a very entertaining account where one of them got run over by a Segway! A really great evening to get us back in the rhythm of camping life!
